Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. It is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Health involves personal beliefs, attitudes, and values as well as environmental factors that affect one’s health. The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing” But what is a health problem? A health problem can be defined as an illness or injury which causes distress to the person affected by it. It may also be defined as a condition affecting the body in such a way that it interferes with normal activities. The term ‘health’ includes both physical and mental aspects of human life. People who are healthy have good physical and mental health; people who are ill have poor physical and/or mental health.

what causes health problems?

There are many different reasons why someone might develop a health problem. Some of these include:

Genetic disorders – These are conditions caused by changes in our genes. They can cause serious illnesses like cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, and Tay-Sachs disease.

Infectious diseases – These are illnesses caused by infections from viruses, bacteria, or parasites. Examples include malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis.

Environmental exposures – These are illnesses caused when we come into contact with things in the environment that make us ill. For example, some types of cancer are linked to smoking cigarettes. Other examples include lead poisoning from drinking contaminated water and air pollution.

Trauma – This is any kind of injury to your body. It could be due to accidents, violence, or medical procedures. Traumatic injuries can range from minor cuts and bruises to major organ damage.

Psychological stress – Psychological stress occurs when you feel worried, anxious, or depressed. Stressful events can happen at home, work, or school. Common sources of psychological stress include financial worries, relationship issues, family conflicts, bereavement, and bullying.

Dietary habits – Poor diet choices can lead to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Eating too much junk food and not eating enough fruit and vegetables can also contribute to weight gain.

Drug use – Drugs can cause health problems if they are taken incorrectly or for long periods of time. Many drugs are prescribed to treat specific conditions and are safe when used correctly. However, there are other drugs that can cause side effects. These include alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, and prescription medication.


Health problems can be caused by many different things including genetic disorders, infectious diseases, trauma, dietary habits, drug use, and psychological stress. Although most health problems are preventable, it is important to know how to recognize them so that they can be treated early on.
